Shrouded in mystery and legends that stem from the heart of the ancient traditions of the indigenous peoples of southern Mexico, Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms of the Mazatapec strain offer a unique spiritual experience that allows users to delve into the unconscious and understand their unique place in the universe. In addition, Mazatapec is remarkably easy to grow, making it a good choice for even the most inexperienced mycologist to connect with the divine nature of mushrooms.

Origin

This strain is sacred and revered by the Mazatec, the ancient Indian tribe of the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, who have used it in ritual ceremonies for many generations. Legend has it that Maria Sabina, the famous Mazatec shamaness, gave it to Robert Gordon Wasson, one of the founding fathers of Western shroom culture. In the mid-1950s, Wasson traveled through Mexico "in search of the magic mushroom" (as his Life magazine article was titled). After the magical properties of psilocybin mushrooms became widely known, the Mazatapec strain gained a cult status that it confidently maintains to this day.

Appearance

Mazatapec mushrooms are medium-sized, making them easy to grow using the PF-Tek method. The cap is 5-6 cm in diameter and sits on an elegant yet sturdy stem that reaches a height of up to 13 cm. Young shrooms have a dark brown color and a conical cap shape. As they mature, the cap becomes more rounded and turns a rich golden hue. The rupture of the veil signals the harvesting of the shrooms, as the level of active substances is at its peak at this time.

Growing Peculiarities and Yields

In general, cultivation of Mazatapec is possible even for inexperienced mycologists, since this strain is resistant to minor variations in sterility and is undemanding in terms of substrate choice. Mazatapec thrives on cereals (rye, oats, and wheat) and substrates enriched with manure, but can also adapt to a straw-based medium.

Although the colonization rate is slow, sometimes taking up to several weeks, it is rewarded with an impressive yield of up to 350 g of raw mushrooms from 1L of substrate in the first flush and up to 200 g in the subsequent two flushes. When growing in a monotube, it is possible to have more generous flushes – up to 5 of them. This requires strict adherence to the cultivation method and climate conditions. During colonization, maintain a temperature of 25-30 °C with relative humidity not exceeding 40%. For successful and abundant fruiting, Mazatapec requires a stable climate of 22-25 °C and relative humidity close to 100%. To ensure the mushrooms have an attractive shape, provide them with a faint light source, such as LED or CFL. Deformation of the stem, a high number of aborted pins, and sluggish development may indicate a buildup of CO2 in the grow room. Ensure regular ventilation of the fruiting chamber, or install a simple ventilation system to automate this process.

Effects and Dosages

Mazatapec is highly treasured by native shamans (who are experts on mushrooms) for a reason. This strain takes psychonauts on a deep introspective journey, clearing the mind of clutter, allowing them to meet their true selves and get straight answers to longstanding questions. However, the effects depend primarily on your preparation and attitude before the trip. Three days before the session, refrain from eating meat and any intoxicating substances (including coffee), and minimize the influence of information, especially disturbing or irritating content. On the day of the session, calm your mind with meditation and create a positive mood. If this is your first encounter with magic mushrooms, invite an experienced sitter you trust and consume no more than 1-1.5 g of dried mushrooms. For advanced users, the optimal dose is 3-5 g.
