Amazing Koh Samui has gained a reputation in the shroom community as a potent yet friendly, easy-to-grow strain. Honor its power, and it will reveal the secrets of existence beyond the reach of science or philosophy.

Origin

The strain was discovered by the legendary mycologist John Allen, who classified it as cubensis when the first specimens were found on Samui Island (now Koh Samui, Thailand) in the 1990s. Some researchers, particularly the Mexican mycologist and anthropologist Gaston Guzman, disagreed with John Allen in the matter of taxonomy. Guzman suggested that Koh Samui belongs to the Mexican species of psilocybin mushrooms because of the spore structure of the strain and its ability to form sclerotia in the wild. However, most researchers agree that Koh Samui is a subspecies of Psilocybe cubensis, which is supported by the classic appearance of the strain.

Appearance

The caps of mature Koh Samui fruiting bodies are characterized by a rich light-chestnut or caramel color, often with whitish spots across the surface. When fully open, the cap has a diameter of 2-6 cm. The stems typically do not grow more than 13 cm in height, making it an ideal candidate for PF-Tek cultivation.

When young, the mushroom caps are spherical or conical, with some specimens having a distinctive nipple-like protrudence in the center. As they mature, the caps flatten with occasional unfolding of the edges to form a wavy line around the entire circle. The dark gray gills turn black as they mature, signaling to the attentive mycologist the chance to lift their own spore prints.

Growing Peculiarities and Yields

Koh Samui is known for vigorous mycelium growth rates that actively colonizes the nutrient substrate in 7-12 days. As a tropical species, the strain grows best in the dark at 28-30 °C and can withstand a brief drop in temperature to 25 °C, which will slightly stunt hyphae development. Beginners can use grains of the medium fraction (wheat, raw oats, rye) as a substrate. For experienced growers, we recommend the use of a hay and straw base supplemented with pasteurized manure of ruminants. This will greatly increase the yield and enhance the psychedelic potential of the mushrooms.

During the fruiting period, the fruiting chamber should be maintained at a relative humidity of at least 95% and a temperature in the range of 22-25 °C. A stable microclimate, combined with a constant gentle airflow, favors the development of attractive mushrooms and reduces the risk of mutations or the formation of abortions.

When grown in bulk trays or the monotube, Koh Samui forms dense clusters of fruiting bodies that almost completely cover the substrate surface. On the average, the first flush yields about 250-350 g of raw mushrooms per 1 liter of substrate. The second and third flushes bring slightly lower yields of up to 200 g each, but it is during this period that the spawn produces fruiting bodies with large caps that are perfect for lifting prints.

Effects and Dosages

For most people, 1-2 g of dried mushrooms is the optimal starting point for an introduction to magic mushrooms, inducing a slight alteration of consciousness with mild visual distortions. This kind of effect will be enough for the apprentice myconaut to get an idea of what he will encounter in the following sessions.

A dosage of 2-4 g causes a loss of the usual perception of reality and a partial dissolution of the traveler's identity in the continuous flow of the universe. A colorful extravaganza of the entire cosmos will unfold before your eyes, calling you to join it in a harmonious and synchronized dance. A dosage of more than 4 g will turn into an indescribable journey beyond the limits of time and space. It is characterized by a complete immersion in oneself, a transition to another dimension or a temporary enlightenment, which allows one to reach a transcendental state and experience the "ego death". These experiences can be emotionally and psychologically challenging, and are recommended only for advanced wanderers after extensive preparation.
